{"id":24250,"date":"2016-09-07T20:42:44","date_gmt":"2016-09-07T19:42:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/?p=24250"},"modified":"2016-09-08T15:20:18","modified_gmt":"2016-09-08T14:20:18","slug":"len-blavatniks-access-industries-takes-exclusive-control-deezer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/len-blavatniks-access-industries-takes-exclusive-control-deezer\/","title":{"rendered":"Len Blavatnik&#8217;s Access Industries takes &#8216;exclusive control&#8217; of Deezer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Deezer is no longer a French company, and Len Blavatnik&#8217;s Access Industries is in charge of its destiny.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s according to newly-released evaluation by France&#8217;s Competition Authority seen by MBW, which explains that Access was granted &#8216;exclusive control&#8217; of the streaming business in June.<\/p>\n<p>This &#8216;exclusive control&#8217; structure was apparently agreed between Access and Deezer on January 12 &#8211; just as Access<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/deezer-absorbs-e100m-investment-from-orange-and-access-industries\/\" target=\"_blank\"> joined together with Orange in a \u20ac100m ($109m) investment in Deezer.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>[UPDATE: Sources close to Access tell MBW that its 50%+ ownership of Deezer was a mechanical result of its investment in January. Len Blavatnik&#8217;s company is said to have no plans to make any changes amongst Deezer&#8217;s management. Although Deezer is now majority owned by US-based Access, the streaming firm&#8217;s HQ will remain in Paris.]<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was the second time that Access had invested in the Spotify rival; it joined together with Idinvest to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2012\/10\/06\/deezer-raises-130-million-series-d-round-led-by-warner-music-groups-owner-access-industries\/\" target=\"_blank\">raise an initial \u20ac100m investment into the firm back in October 2012<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2016\/09\/16DCC97versionpublication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">download the French Competition Authority report into Deezer and Access through here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Information regarding Access&#8217;s percentage stake in Deezer is redacted, but <a href=\"https:\/\/electronlibre.info\/access-industries-prend-controle-exclusif-de-deezer\/\" target=\"_blank\">ElectronLibre<\/a> suggests that Access now owns in excess of <strong>50%<\/strong> in Deezer, with Orange taking a <strong>10%<\/strong> stake.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Deezer_Logo.jpg\"><a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Deezer_Logo.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Deezer_Logo.jpg\" data-lightbox=\"image-set\" data-title=\"Deezer_Logo\"><img  alt=\"Deezer_Logo\" title=\"Deezer_Logo\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Deezer_Logo-80x57.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Deezer_Logo-80x57.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Deezer_Logo-160x113.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Deezer_Logo-320x226.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Deezer_Logo-418x295.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Deezer_Logo-648x458.jpg 648w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><i class=\"fas fa-search-plus magnifying-glass-icon\"><\/i><\/a><\/a><\/figure><p>Access&#8217;s control of Deezer may raise alarm bells amongst Universal, Sony and the indies &#8211; who will point out that Access is also the 100% owner of Warner Music Group, which it bought for $3.3bn in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The French competition authorities acknowledged this in their decision, pointing out the &#8216;vertical link&#8217; between Access, Deezer and Warner.<\/p>\n<p>The report admitted that this &#8216;vertical link&#8217; had the potential to restrict competition &#8216;potentially crowding out competitors or penalizing them by increasing their costs&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>However, it said the risk of anti-competitive behavior was significantly lowered due to Warner&#8217;s market share in key territories being lower than 30%.<\/p>\n<p>Within the European Economic Area (EEA), the authorities estimated that Warner&#8217;s recorded music market share stood at 10-20%, with Universal on 30%-40% and Sony plus the independents on 20%-30% apiece.<\/p>\n<p>They also estimated that Deezer held a 0%-5% market share of total digital music revenues across the EEA, with both Spotify and iTunes (Apple) on 40%-50% each.<\/p>\n<p>However, Deezer was estimated to hold a 40%-50% market share of streaming music value in France alone, with Spotify on 20%-30%.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Deezer lost just under <strong>$100m<\/strong> (\u20ac87m) in the three-and-a-half years from 2012 to end of June 2015 alone.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2012 and 2014, it paid out <strong>$23m (\u20ac20.6m) in unallocated advances (breakage)<\/strong> to record companies \u2013 out of <strong>\u20ac257m ($287m)<\/strong> total advances in the period.<\/p>\n<p>According to a document released when Deezer attempted to IPO last year, Deezer\u2019s total global subscriber base stood at <strong>6.34m<\/strong> in the first half of 2015.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New French competition report reveals ownership structure<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":22600,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[486,397],"class_list":["post-24250","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-deezer","tag-len-blavatnik"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24250","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=24250"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24250\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/22600"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=24250"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=24250"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=24250"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
