In 1991 \u2013 seventeen years before Joseph became one of the most successful leaders of the global music industry as CEO &amp; Chairman of Universal Music UK \u2013 he graduated from the London School of Economics.<\/p>\n<p>From there, Joseph <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/david-joseph-we-creatively-empower-our-artists-globally-im-proud-of-that\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began working<\/a> at a London advertising agency (on a salary of less than \u00a37,000 a year), where he won an award for a Channel 4 ad campaign for Deafness Awareness Week. Soon after, Joseph took on video games giant Sega as a key client. The house of Sonic then took Joseph in-house as one of its first UK employees.<\/p>\n<p>Having relied heavily on collaborations with the music industry, Joseph was poached by the then head of RCA UK, Hugh Goldsmith, and quickly found his feet in both music marketing and artist development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of a sudden I was working in a business where I loved everything about it,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/david-joseph-we-creatively-empower-our-artists-globally-im-proud-of-that\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joseph had said<\/a> of his arrival at RCA.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph has led Universal Music UK as Chairman &amp; CEO since March 2008.<\/p>\n<p>In this position, Joseph has spearheaded a company whose labels have broken global stars such as Sam Smith, Mumford &amp; Sons, Amy Winehouse, Lewis Capaldi, and many more.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6>David Joseph career: Polydor and Universal Music UK<\/h6>\n<p>David Joseph was named Chairman &amp; CEO of Universal Music UK nearly ten years after he initially joined Universal as General Manager of Polydor in August 1998.<\/p>\n<p>At Polydor, Joseph enjoyed success with artists such as Scissor Sisters, Ian Brown, Elbow, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Snow Patrol and Girls Aloud \u2013 as well as US superstars such as Eminem and Dr Dre.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOur labels shouldn\u2019t feel they have to apologise or self-justify the value they bring. We creatively empower our artists globally: I buy into that and I\u2019m proud of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">David Joseph, Universal Music UK<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Joseph was promoted to co-President of Polydor alongside Colin Barlow, with duo orchestrating a multi-platinum comeback for Take That in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, Joseph was named Chairman &amp; CEO of Universal Music UK, reporting to Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman &amp; CEO of the global Universal Music Group.<\/p>\n<p>Before taking the Polydor job, Joseph was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universalmusic.com\/executives\/david-joseph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">head of artist development<\/a> at RCA in the UK, a Sony Music label.<\/p>\n<p>There, he worked with artists including Take That, Kylie Minogue and Annie Lennox.<\/p>\n<p>Universal Music UK is home to labels such as Capitol, Decca, 0207 Def Jam, Island, Polydor and EMI Records, in addition to Abbey Road Studios.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6>Departure from UMG UK<\/h6>\n<p>In September 2024, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/david-joseph-chairman-and-ceo-of-universal-music-uk-is-leaving-the-company\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was announced<\/a> that David Joseph was departing\u00a0<a class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Universal Music Group [4,400 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/universal-music-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universal Music Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The widely respected British exec confirmed the news to his team on September 23 in a note obtained by MBW.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to share with you that after 26 extraordinary years, I\u2019ve decided to step back from the company,\u201d wrote Joseph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been an honour to work alongside you, creating something truly exceptional, a company that wasn\u2019t only number one but also led with heart and creativity. We\u2019ve done that together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis career, once impossible to imagine, has been a gift for which I\u2019m deeply grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joseph also confirmed that he was due to begin a Master\u2019s degree In Religion and Theology at King\u2019s College London.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6>The Royal Society of Arts<\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">In July 2025, it was announced that David Joseph CBE had joined the UK-based Royal Society of Arts (RSA) as its new CEO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Joseph formally took up the post in September 2025, succeeding Andy Haldane.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"il\">MBW understands that Joseph<\/span> had completed the first year of his MA and delayed the final year to take on this role.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018royal society for arts, manufactures and commerce\u2019 is described as a \u201csocial impact charity that has been at the forefront of social change for 270 years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The org says that it continues to maintain a connection with the Royal Household; its Patron is the Princess Royal.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6>David Joseph: Professional philosophy<\/h6>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/david-joseph-we-creatively-empower-our-artists-globally-im-proud-of-that\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 interview with Music Business Worldwide<\/a>, Joseph said: \u201cWe employ about 650 people here [at Universal Music UK], and I know that every day they are thinking, worrying, second-guessing, perfecting, investing, challenging and empowering artists \u2013 and to me, that has to come with a value. We creatively empower our artists globally: I buy into that and I\u2019m proud of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6>David Joseph: Additional achievements<\/h6>\n<p>In addition to his Universal role, Joseph is executive producer of<em> Amy<\/em>, the 2015 documentary about Amy Winehouse directed by Asif Kapadia.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph has been a member of the BPI Council since 2005.
